The Art of Sound

Tonight is the kick off party for Piano Push Play at the Portland Art Museum. If you don’t know, it’s a project that brings musicians and visual artists together. Because of them, you will be finding pianos all summer long, hiding in the strangest of places. Each piano has been decorated by a local artist, and wants you to play it! Even if all you know is chopsticks, how could you say no?

The love of music is darn near universal. We might not all like the same kind, but we all feel it in our bones when it’s good. Sound has the power to moves us in profound ways; different frequencies triggering different emotions.

An artist once told me that you know a piece is done when you can hear it. So with no further adieu, please enjoy these works by local artists that capture sound, music, silence, and everything in between.

The Rental Sales Gallery, Portland Art Museum recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands.

These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River.

We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities - past, present, future - and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
