Time Keeps on Slipping

Tonight while we are sleeping, an absurd type of robbery will occur. At 2:00 a.m., we will all magically lose 1 hour. Poof! Gone! As if time wasn’t moving fast enough already.

We all experience time but have trouble coming up with a definition. We do our best to measure it with seasons, with memory, with oscillations of caesium atoms, and yet it remains ineffable. We even do silly things like move the hands on clocks around twice a year. Artists do their bit too, trying to capture what history looked like, what a certain time of day feels like, all the while creating a little time capsule from the first moment they started the piece till the moment they decided it was complete.

The Rental Sales Gallery, Portland Art Museum recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands.

These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River.

We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities - past, present, future - and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
