New RSG Artists: Introducing Teresa Meier

I’m great. I’m an artist, teacher, native Oregonian, beer drinker, cat lover, wayfarer and wanderer. My left eye is lazy, I stick my tongue out when I smile, and I cannot for the life of me figure out the stove top diagrams. I love summer, miss the rain when it’s gone and am transfixed by the quietness of snow…

I have always loved puzzles. I like to sift through all the pieces, analyzing their parts, and take immense satisfaction in seeing how they all fit together. For me, a photograph and a concept is an elaborate puzzle–a puzzle that puts me in remote landscapes at dusk, wandering through antique stores, building in the wood shop, sewing a new costume, and recently, a return to hand-drawn illustration.

My imagery is not meant to be viewed small, as I have an affinity for detail and vast, sweeping landscapes. I create these large prints through an extensive “stitching” process in Photoshop that requires a custom-built computer, a beast I lovingly nicknamed Thor.

The Rental Sales Gallery, Portland Art Museum recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands.

These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River.

We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities - past, present, future - and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
