Spring Show Artist Showcase Part 2

May 25, 2019

We’re continuing to showcase some of the artists who have had works displayed in our Spring Show. We are lucky to have many fantastic artists who are part of this gallery and we would love to celebrate them all. Hopefully, over the course of future blogs, we’ll be able to do that with as many of our artists as possible!

To see more of our artists and the beautiful work which they create (and all of which is, of course, for sale or rent), come into the gallery or how a browse through the Artists page of our website.

Jennifer Joyce

Jennifer Joyce, The Hoi Polloi

Jenny Joyce is a Oregon artist who has been working since the 1960s and has established a distinguished reputation. She has had commissions all across the city of Portland and beyond, including creating murals for places as varied as Salem Hospital and a number of McMenamins establishments. She has been part of the Rental Sales Gallery since 1978 and her constantly-evolving style has made her an extremely popular artist with our clients.

Angelita Surmon

Angelita Surmon, Shimmer

Born in Lebanon, Oregon, self-described “painter of Northwestern landscapes” Angelita Surmon creates beautiful images of the natural world. Angelita says that these pieces “dance on the line between representation and abstraction”, and these two pieces which she submitted to the Spring Show certainly demonstrate that beautifully. She is represented by galleries all across Oregon and Washington and is a long-standing member of RSG.

Robert Gleason

Robert Gleason, Fast Bike

Robert’s paintings, inspired by his deep love of urban environments, are a popular part of the RSG collections. “Cities are rich ground for an artist”, says Robert, “as they are a physical record of this search for meaning on a grand scale. Every building bears an account of those who built it and those who lived in it.” Inspired by this, he has produced detailed urban scenes of Portland. However, his most-recent piece Fast Bike, showcases a different style and is a striking new addition to the collection as a result.

Sidonie Caron

Sidonie Caron, Summer Haze & the Tilikum Crossing

Sidonie Caron is one of the most well-known and respected figures in the Portland art community and has been a part of RSG for many years, being one of our most-established artists. Born in Germany, brought up in the UK and now long resident in Oregon, Sidonie’s body of work is as eclectic as her life. Her current body of displayed work in the gallery ranges from these landscapes of urban Portland to Asian-influenced abstract works, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

CJ Hurley

CJ Hurley, The Forest Path

Artist and designer CJ Hurley has been part of RSG since 2010. His current works are these beautiful pieces, delicately-created with watercolor and Indian ink. CJ says: “Creating works of art that fire the imagination, stir the deepest emotions, inspire the soul, and offer new things to explore upon each viewing is the most gratifying and satisfying thing I can do with my art.”

CJ Hurley, Cardinal

The Rental Sales Gallery, Portland Art Museum recognizes and honors the Indigenous peoples of this region on whose ancestral lands the museum now stands.

These include the Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Kathlemet, Molalla, Multnomah and Watlala Chinook Peoples and the Tualatin Kalapuya who today are part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and many other Native communities who made their homes along the Columbia River.

We also want to recognize that Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here. We respectfully acknowledge and honor all Indigenous communities - past, present, future - and are grateful for their ongoing and vibrant presence.
